The Bulldogs had the opportunity to rest after suffering several injuries through the season so far during the bye week. One injured player was senior center Joe Bernardi. Bernardi discussed the importance of the bye week for the ‘Dogs.
“It was good for the whole team,” said Bernardi. “We were all able to get a couple days rest, and get off our feet. I think it was beneficial.”
Bernardi sat out the previous game versus San Jose State, due to an ankle injury. The senior expressed how it felt to have to watch from the sidelines.
“It was hard,” said the senior. “I was really looking forward to that. But at the end of the day, we were up there for one reason and that was to win and to get closer to our goal of winning [the WAC]. It was hard, but on the big scale of things it wasn’t that big of a deal because we went up there to win a game and that’s what we did.”
Bernardi says his ankle is feeling better after the bye week. “The ankle feels good…getting better every day.”
But will he play Saturday against Louisiana Tech?
“I’m going to try and just work hard every day and progress every day. That’s Coach Hill’s call, not mine, but I’m going to do everything I can and just try to get better every day.”
Louisiana Tech saw a change in the coaching staff this offseason, as first year head coach Sonny Dykes replaced Derek Dooley. Bernardi discussed what has changed this year for them.
“Not much on defense” said the center, “Because it’s the same defensive coordinator…they always have good athletes on defense, they can run, their good tacklers, and they play hard. They’re always up for the Fresno State game, so it will be a very tough game like it always is against them.”
The Fresno State Bulldogs enter the final five game stretch of the season this week. Bernardi says the team’s main focus is on consistency; something Chris Carter and the defense has stressed as well.
“Just consistency,” said Bernardi. “If we want to make a run for this thing we just have to be consistent every day and execute on Saturdays. There’s enough talent on this team to win every game on the schedule. We just got to make sure we’re consistent day in and day out and prepare each week and work hard.”
