Fresno State stayed competitive with Nevada through the first 27 minutes, holding a lead as late as with 13:09 remaining. However, it was all Nevada down the stretch, as a 14-to-3 run boosted the Wolf Pack to a double-digit lead that Fresno State could not recover from.
“They had some opportunities that they cashed in on,” said Fresno State Head Coach Rodney Terry. “We had some empty possessions we didn’t take advantage of.”
Fresno State got off to a hot start, getting off to an 18-8 lead in the opening 10 minutes.
Nevada’s star point guard Deonte Burton shifted the game to Nevada’s favor, scoring eight straight points including back-to-back three pointers. Burton led the 10-0 run to even the score.
Fresno State could not contain Nevada’s backcourt talent, as Burton had 18 points, and guard Malik Story had 17. Center Dario Hunt had his seventh double-double in 11 games, with 13 points and 11 rebounds. The Wolf Pack shot 51% from the floor en route to their 13th straight win.
“They’re a good team,” said Terry. “They’re older players. They’ve had a chance to go through the WAC already one time.”
“That’s supposed to be the best team in the [WAC].”
Tyler Johnson who tied a career-high 17 points and had eight rebounds led the Bulldogs. Jerry Brown added 14 points and nine rebounds. Kevin Olekaibe struggled shooting the ball, scoring 13 points on 4-of-17 shooting from the field.
Fresno State falls to 9-12 on the season, and 1-4 in WAC play. The Bulldogs continue their road trip with games at Louisiana Tech and New Mexico State next week. Fresno State tips off in Ruston, LA on Thursday at 4:00 p.m. PST.
