Howard visited UNLV in mid-December and committed to the Rebels shortly after his visit. While the Bulldogs showed some interest under the old coaching staff before Pat Hill was fired, Fresno State didn't offer or schedule a visit until last week.
"It was pretty last minute," Howard said about canceling his visit to Fresno. "The Fresno State coach came to me on Wednesday and told me to visit on Friday."
Howard told new Fresno State offensive line coach Cameron Norcross he wasn't going to visit on Thursday.
"I wasn't surprised on the interest [from Fresno State]," added Howard. "I was talking to Coach Hill but the new staff called [late].
"I sat down with my family and high school coach and decided sticking with UNLV was best. They really have a nice campus. It's a physical therapy school and I'm interested in the medical field. It's a young team. I like Coach [Bobby] Hauck, the facilities, and environment – everyone gets along with everybody."
Nevada was his other offer, but Norcross, who came to Fresno State from Nevada, wasn't Howard's recruiter while on staff.
"I told him I was okay and I would stick with Vegas," said Howard. "He was telling me about the [Nevada-UNLV] rivalry and why I should consider Fresno.
"It was so last minute, if they had came earlier, I would have considered [the offer]. I waited a week after visiting UNLV before committing."
The Bulldogs were recruiting him to play offensive line. The Rebels like him on the defensive side of the ball. Howard says he had no preference.
Howard had interest in Pac-12 schools and garnered interest from Oregon and UCLA among others before the season. But in the end he says, "I picked Vegas over Fresno State. I'm very content with UNLV."
