Taylor Powell of Tuscon (Arizona) is a 6-foot, 200-pound linebacker who has gained interest from several Mountain West schools. At Salpointe Catholic HS, Powell is a middle linebacker in a 4-3 base defense. He has good eyes from behind the line of scrimmage and excels at both chasing down the ball carrier or dropping back into coverage.
"I feel like I'm great at recognizing offensive plays," Powell said. "I really have a good nose for the ball. I really just want to improve my strength - working with my hands to get lineman off of me."
Powell also showed promise on the offensive side of the ball in his junior year. Out of the backfield, he is a downhill runner who can take run through contact. He is primarily being recruited at linebacker at the next level, but has the versatility to play both sides of the ball.
"This year I'll be taking more running back reps since our running back from last year graduated," Powell said. "That should also be a big role in my game this year… I talked to San Diego State, they want me to play fullback over there. But mainly linebacker for the rest of the schools."
Along with San Diego State, Powell has heard from Kansas State and Air Force - both schools inviting him to their camps. He currently holds three offers from Fresno State, Nevada, and Colorado State. Fresno State was the first to offer and the Bulldogs remain on the top of his list despite gaining two more offers.
"I definitely like all of the schools a lot," Powell said. "I'm taking an unofficial visit to Fresno State this weekend… That should be good to get up there and meet the coaches and check out the facilities a little bit. We'll see how that goes. Fresno State is definitely my top school right now."
Fresno State defensive line coach Pete Germano and defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Nick Toth have been recruiting Powell. He says he has a good relationship with the two coaches and is looking forward to meeting them this weekend.
"It's going real good," Powell said of his discussions with Germano and Toth. "I was mainly just talking about me getting up there and just meeting them and everything and checking out the school. Me and coach [Germano]... have a pretty good relationship. Coach Toth, we talk through twitter and stuff so he's really cool. I Just can't wait to get up there and meet them."
Powell hopes to pick up more offers over the summer, but says his focus as of now is to help Salpointe Catholic HS earn another state championship. One goal for Powell is to improve his forty time to the mid 4.6 range - he last ran a 4.71 forty time.
Stay tuned for the latest on how Powell's unofficial visit to Fresno State went.
