SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The No. 19-ranked Fresno State stymied the University of Utah softball team this afternoon, blanking the Utes, 5-0, in game one of the Campbell/Cartier Tournament here in stormy San Diego, Calif., this afternoon.

FSU's Jamie Southern no-hit the Utes (5-3) and was one batter shy of a perfect game. The lone Ute baserunner was Diana Phillips who reached on an error in the fourth inning.

Samantha Schroeder takes the loss in falling to 0-1 for the season. She walked two and struck out two in allowing three runs on three hits. Southern pitched a gem for FSU, which begins its season 1-0. She fanned 14 of the 22 batters faced in seven innings of work.

Lindsie Nielsen came on in relief for the Utes. She went two and two-thirds innings and allowed two runs in scattering six hits.

FSU tapped the Ute pitching staff for nine hits and took advantage of six errors.

Fresno State got on the board first by plating an unearned run. In the first, a dropped fly ball with two outs allowed Christina Clark to score from second. Meanwhile, FSU got its second and third run in the third and fourth innings with a pair of solo home runs to left field. Nichole Willis hit a round-tripper in the third while Clark duplicated the task in fourth.

FSU tagged another two runs on the board in the sixth, its final at bat.
