Saying Mychal Kendricks (6-0, 205) was a sleeper prior to last month’s Stanford Nike Camp is an understatement to say the least. He had no offers, despite meeting several coaches on campus prior to the Nike Camp.
“All the coaches talked to me before,” Kendricks said. “I gave them my highlight DVD and they all said we hope to see you at the Nike Camp.”
Kendricks not only performed well at the Nike Camp, he earned Nike Camp MVP honors at LB.
“I was a sleeper,” Kendricks said. “But after all the coaches heard I earned MVP, I got the offers.”
Kendricks has seven offers now, including his latest he received last week at the Fresno State Skills Camp. The other six he says are as follows: Cal, Oregon, Oregon State, San Jose State, San Diego State, and Sacramento State. All six came to see him before the Nike Camp and he says he saw all six schools’ coaches in Palo Alto. Nonetheless, he says Fresno State, to his surprise, was not among the school contacting him early on.
“I was expecting them [Fresno State] to be the first since I play right across the street,” Kendricks said. “I didn’t see any of their coaches at the Nike Camp.”
He says not getting the early attention from his hometown school somewhat bothered him. However, after the skills camp and talking to Coach Pat Hill, he says, “It doesn’t affect me.”
“I talked to Coach Hill,” Kendricks said. “He said they don’t usually offer too many kids early. It kind of hurt at first. I used to go their games when I was freshman and sophomore and be in aw. I really wanted to go to Fresno State. After talking to Coach Hill, I realize it’s a level playing field.”
Kendricks moved Fresno State into his top three along with California and Oregon. “They’re right at home,” he said. “That is heck of important.”
Moreover, he says more offers should be coming his way, but says there are few other schools he has real interest in attending.
“Maybe an East Coast school, like Michigan or LSU” Kendricks said. “I’m not saying I’d necessarily go there, but it would be cool to get the attention.”
Kendricks says he would like to get his college decision out of the way early to focus on his senior year.
“I would like to commit before the season,” Kendricks said. “So, I don’t have to worry about scouts being at my games, putting added pressure on me.”
Kendricks plans to attend the Velocity Camp at Hoover High School later this summer but has not other plans to attend camps at colleges at this time.
