Robert Golden (5-10.5, 190) was tied up Sunday night, and he did not get back to us as planned. In addition, Arizona Defensive Coordinator Mark Stoops came by Monday for an in-home visit. Nonetheless, he gave us a call late Monday night, and apologized for not getting back to us sooner. Overall, Golden says he came away impressed with the Bulldogs.
“I know a lot about Fresno because it's my hometown,” Golden said. “It was different [than other visits] because they took us to River Park, but I already hang there every other weekend. So they couldn’t really take me somewhere I hadn’t been.”
Golden has list down to five schools, Arizona, Oregon State, Fresno State, Oregon, and UCLA, in that order. But that can all change this weekend after his official trip to Corvallis, Oregon.
“I will know for sure [after my trip to Oregon State] where I will go to school,” Golden said.
In meantime, he says Fresno State was very cool, and says the ‘Dogs have moved up to No. 3 on his list.
“Fresno State was a nice trip,” Golden said. “It is a nice campus. “I had never toured the campus before.”
“I am real glad I took my trip to Fresno. It was worth the trip. I never knew they had kids like that there. They’re building something special. They’re like a family. All the players are focused on the bowl game. Academic wise, they’re trying to get somewhere. The team GPA is like 2.9. They’re real serious about education.
Bulldog redshirt safety Zak Hill was Golden’s host, which made Golden’s mom feel comfortable.
“Zak was straight up,” Golden said. “We mostly just hung out and played video games. He was the best host I’ve had on all my trips. My mom liked Zak a lot. I brought him over the house and stuff. She wants me to stay close to home, and likes Fresno [State]. My dad says it’s my decision.”
“She spoke to Grant’s [Valentine] mom. [Grant’s mom] is a real cool lady. She also liked Fresno. Grant was a real cool kid.”
Fresno State is recruiting Golden as a safety. Only Oregon is recruiting him in a similar capacity among his favorites.
“Oregon wants me as a rover, strong safety type,” Golden said. “Oregon State is recruiting me as a corner. So is Arizona.”
Golden is not bothered by the fact Fresno State is not in the Pac-10. Moreover, he says the Bulldog coaches did not pressure him into committing on his visit.
“Me and Coach Hill are real cool,” Golden said. “He wasn’t trying to pressure me or anything. He was more like, ‘I know you really want to play in the Pac-10.’ He says no matter what, I always have a home at Fresno State.”
