Norco (Calif.) LB Damion Whittington (6-1, 218) admits to watching the Bulldogs 40-28 Roady’s Humanitarian Bowl win over Georgia Tech.
“It was a real good game, for Fresno State,” Whittington said. “One of their running backs was real good. I watched all their linebackers. I liked the way they played defense, aggressive. I thought [Marcus Riley] was really good in open space.”
Whittington is an aggressive defender who likes to unleash havoc in the open field.
“I like being in space, showing my ability,” Whittington said. “I can read better than most linebackers.”
Fresno State is recruiting the three-star standout as a linebacker, while most everyone is recruiting him as a safety.
“I think they are planning for me as a weakside linebacker or rover position,” Whittington said.
He says he has offers from Nevada, Utah State, Colorado State, and Northwestern State.
“I can’t think of any reason [Fresno State] hasn't offered me,” Whittington said. “I think they may offer me this week.”
Ideally, he would like to take all his trips before he makes his commitment. He will visit Nevada next week and Utah State February 1. “I’m really interested in seeing what they’ve done at Utah State,” Whittington said of the Aggies newer facilities.
Whittington says he is more familiar with Nevada than any other school recruiting him. He does not claim a favorite, but says the Wolf Pack have a slight edge because, “I’ve known them longer,” he said.
What does he know about Fresno State?
“Not that much really. I know that they put people in the NFL.”
Whittington says Fresno State first starting talking to him in the spring. However, they did not start recruiting him hard until after Bulldog coaches saw one of his games in September. He has never been to Fresno, but he says he was close to coming up for a game last season.
“Jordan Campbell was going to take me up to one of the games last year but he wasn’t able to get enough tickets,” Whittington said of his former Norco teammate who signed with USC over Fresno State in 2007.
“I want to get to know more about the [Fresno State] football program. To see if I get along with the coaches and players.”
Whittington reports a current GPA of 3.0. He scored a 1350 on his first attempt at the SAT. Although he is qualified, he plans to retake it to improve his score.
