For the first time in 17 years, Fresno State is headed to the College World Series. In epic fashion, Steve Susdorf caught the final out sliding from a sit-down position in the Bulldogs’ 12-9 over No. 3 Arizona State. The ‘Dogs become the first team seeded No. 4 in a regional to reach the College World Series in the 64-team era. | |||

Monday night’s game was tied up at five runs apiece when Fresno State exploded for six runs in the seventh. The rally was highlighted by Erik Wetzel’s three-run double down the right-field line, and capped by Steve Susdorf's two-run homer. The Bulldogs led 12-5 heading into the bottom of the ninth, but Arizona State made one last run. ASU’s first two runners got on base against Bulldog P Sean Bonesteele. Knowing the Devils offensive prowess, Bulldog Head Coach Mike Batesole beckoned ace closer Brandon Burke to get the final two outs. Burke was one of the heroes Sunday night, throwing 3 1/3 innings of relief. Undoubtedly, he was spent Monday, and the Sun Devils scored four runs in the ninth, heightened by Jason Kipnis’ two-run single. Fr. Matt Newman stepped to the plate with the based loaded with two outs. He had hit a two solo homeruns earlier in the game, and another would make him the winning run. However, Burke got Newman to line out to Susdorf, who made the sliding catch to send the Bulldogs to Omaha for the first time since 1991. The ‘Dogs opened the season ranked 18th in the nation, and had preseason hopes of reaching the College World Series. As arguably the tournaments strongest No. 4 seed, they upset No. 11 Long Beach State and No. 6 San Diego to win the Long Beach Regional. Nevertheless, winning two of three from No. 3 Arizona State is unbelievable. In spite of their great offense, the Sun Devils’ shortfall all year long has been their pitching depth. It was the difference Monday. The Bulldogs use five pitchers. The third, Kris Tomlinson (2-1), threw a hitless sixth for the win. Fresno State was No. 89 in the RPI rakings heading into the NCAA tournament, now they are just a few wins away from winning a national title.
