Kevin Goessling last game situation kick was in 2006 while playing for Anaheim (Calif.) Servite during a high school playoff game. He sat out last season as a redshirt, and entered spring 2008 as the only scholarship place kicker. His next kick, and first as collegiate player, will be on nationally TV on Labor Day versus Big East opponent Rutgers.
A freshman has never started at kicker under Coach Pat Hill. Graduating kicker Clint Stitser started as a sophomore and his first game was at home versus Weber State in 2005. Brett Visintainer was a junior before he took over starting placekicking duties in 2003, but he was the kickoff specialist in seasons prior. The only two other kickers in the Pat Hill era were Asen Asparuhov (2000-02) and Jeff Hanna (1997-99).
Goessling has to follow in the steps of some solid performers. However, he knew the role he would have when he signed in 2007.
“I knew I was going to redshirt,” said Goessling. “I knew I was going to be next line that is how I’ve been preparing for it and that has helped a lot.”
He has had a great fall camp thus far displaying his great length strength and accuracy. Listen to rest of Goessling’s interview for more details and his comments about the upcoming season…
