Second Spring Scrimmage Breakdown

Ryan Colburn

The Fresno State defense continues to have the upper hand this spring. Saturday was supposed to be an 80-100 play scrimmage. However, due to the Bulldog defense's solid performance, the offense was limited to just 41 plays and just eight first downs in the nine series game simulation. Including one-minute offense and compete zone, the scrimmage consisted of 71 plays…

Starting field position: 30 yard line
Starting quarterback: Ryan Colburn

First team offense vs. first team defense – 5 plays, 20 yards, 1 first down (punt)
Play selection: 3 pass, 2 run

While three pass players were called, Colburn was not able to get a pass off. He scrambled on all three plays for 13 combined yards. The drive was highlighted by a nine-yard run by Ryan Mathews on 2nd-and-7. Lonyae Miller had one carry for -2 yards; it was his only carry of the scrimmage.

Drive 2
Starting field position: 16 yard line
Starting quarterback: Colburn

Second team offense vs. second team defense – 5 plays, 84 yards, 1 first down (touchdown)
Play selection: 2 pass, 3 run

Colburn made his best throw on the day escaping the pass rush and finding Darren Newborne on the sideline. Colburn was able to put the ball in spot where only Newborne could catch it for a 44-yard gain on 2nd-and-10. It was the only first down of the drive, as Michael Harris would take his second carry of the scrimmage for a 30-yard touchdown run on 3rd-and-2. He would break Zak Hill's arm tackle at about the 25 and raced untouched after that.

Drive 3
Starting field position: 30 yard line
Starting quarterback: Derek Carr

First team offense vs. first team defense – 3 plays, -5 yards (punt)
Play selection: 2 pass, 1 run

Carr didn't have a great start to the scrimmage. After a four-yard run on a QB sprint, Carr fumbled the subsequent snap for a one-yard loss and sacked for an eight-yard loss by Logan Harrell on the drive's final play.

Drive 4
Starting field position: 25 yard line
Starting quarterback: Carr

Second team offense vs. second team defense – 4 plays, 10 yards, 1 first down (punt)
Play selection: 3 pass, 1 run

Ebahn Feathers took the first snap at quarterback pitching the ball the A.J. Ellis on an option for a 10-yard gain. Carr would throw an incompletion on first down, be sacked by Mario Moore for a 5-yard loss, and throw another incomplete pass on third down.

Drive 5
Starting field position: 29 yard line
Starting quarterback: Feathers

First team offense vs. first team defense – 5 plays, 16 yards, 1 first down (punt)
Play selection: 1 pass, 4 run

Feathers would run for seven and four yards on first and second down, respectively, for the drive's only first down. He threw his only pass of the scrimmage for an incompletion on the subsequent first down. Mathews would carry the ball on second and third third for a combined five yards. The last handoff exchange was botched by Feathers, but Mathews was able to recover it and gain positive yards.

Drive 6
Starting field position: 33 yard line
Starting quarterback: Colburn

Second team offense vs. combo first/second/third team defense – 6 plays, 28 yards, 1 first down (punt)
Play selection: 5 pass, 1 run

Harris started the drive with a two-yard run. After a one-yard scramble by Colburn, he hit Seyi Ajirotutu on the far sideline off another scramble for 34 yards. But the drive would stall quickly. Colburn scrambled for no gain on the subsequent first down, was sacked on second, and threw an incompletion on third down.

Drive 7
Starting field position: 20 yard line
Starting quarterback: Colburn

Combo first/second team offense vs. combo first/second team offense – 4 plays, 80 yards 1 first down (touchdown)
Play selection: 2 pass, 2 run

Jamal Rashad ran for 17 yards on the first play. He would run for a one-yard gain after a Colburn incompletion setting up a 3rd-and-9 from the 38. Harris would catch a screen and weave his way to a 62-yard touchdown.

Drive 8
Starting field position: 35 yard line
Starting quarterback: Carr

Combo first/second team offense vs. combo first/second team defense – 6 plays, 36 yards, 2 first downs (punt)
Play selection: 5 pass, 1 run

Carr would have his most success on this drive. After a five-yard scramble, Ellis would scamper five yards for a first down. Carr would then hit Chastin West for 22 yards – it was Carr's best throw of the day. After an incompletion and a 4-yard pass to Ellis, penalties push the offense back into a 3rd-and-22. Carr scrambled but eventually threw the ball away out of bounds on the final play of the drive.

Drive 9
Starting field position: 2 yard line
Starting quarterback: Carr

First team offense vs. combo first/second team defense – 3 plays, 4 yards (end)
Play selection: 1 pass, 2 run

This drive was doomed from the start. The defense had been stout against the run all day, and it stuffed Rashad for no gain and two yards on first and second down, respectively. Carr hit West for two yards after checking down on the final play.

One-Minute Offense Breakdown
(all drives started at 50)

Drive 1
Starting quarterback: Colburn
Play selection: 6 pass
First team offense vs. first team defense – 6 plays, 20 yards, 1 first down (missed FG)

In one-minute offense, there are few if any designed runs. Colburn threw an incomplete pass on the first play (Y-basic) then hit West for five yards. He scrambled 15 yards on 3rd-and-5 setting up the offense with a first down at the 30.

"From there – my clock is saying, we've got points – now I make sure I don't make a mistake, give us a chance to score," said Colburn. "We need points no matter what.

"What I'm doing is giving our guys a shot."

But against the quarters defense, Colburn was unable to connect with his receivers on the outside. He had West open on one, but on the other three, Colburn said after the scrimmage, he was avoiding mistakes.

"Trying to be smart, maintain a field goal, if we can get a touchdown great but we don't want to lose a field goal – no sacks, just trying to manage the game."

Kevin Goessling lined up for a 46-yard field goal that fell well short of the goal posts.

Drive 2
Starting quarterback: Carr
Play Selection: 7 pass
First team offense vs. first team defense – 7 plays, 39 yards, 3 first downs (missed FG)

Carr looked a lot more comfortable in the one-minute drill. After a 15-yard pass interference penalty on the first play, which Carr threw a beautiful long ball; he hit two of his next three passes. The first to Newborne for 10 yards, the second to Ajirotutu for 14 yards both receivers were able to get out of bounds. However, two false starts, pushed the offense back to the 21. Carr would go 0-of-3 on his final pass attempts. Two were fade routes to Ajirotutu in the end zone, but the corners, despite being well thrown balls, defended both.

Andrew Shapiro would push the 38-yard field goal attempt to the left.

First team offense vs. second team offense – 3 plays, 6 yards (FG)

Drive 4
Starting quarterback: Carr
Play selection: 1 pass
Second team offense vs. combo second/third team defense – 1 play, -7 yards (fumble)

Drive 5
Starting quarterback: Feathers
Play selection: 1 run
First team offense vs. first team defense – 1 play, 25 yards (touchdown)

Feathers was given the final opportunity for the offense to score, and he didn't disappoint. He ran the ball up the middle of the field juking a few defenders before carrying the final one from the two into the end zone.

The subsequent two-point conversion try was no good went Carr was stood up by Terrance Dennis as he attempted to reach the corner of the end zone with his receivers covered.
