‘Dogs Expected to Sign Trio

Tyler Johnson

The spring signing period begins Wednesday and Fresno State has holes to fill. The Bulldogs signed El Segundo (Calif.) post player John Ryan in November and are expected to sign three players this week with at least one more in the coming weeks…

While Fresno State loses just one senior – Sylvester Seay – as many as four scholarships, and possibly more, may be filled this spring. John Ryan (6-8, 245) signed last fall, however, with Brandon Sperling deciding to transfer, another scholarship became available. Couple it with Brandon Webster's departure and the possibility of Paul George entering the NBA Draft and the Bulldogs could add as many as six new players for the 2010-11 season.

Three players expected to sign this week when the spring signing period begins Wednesday are Bracken Funk, Kevin Olekaibe, and Tyler Johnson.

Many might remember Funk, who verbally committed nearly three years ago in September 2007. He helped lead his Highland (Utah) Lone Peak High School squad to three state titles before embarking on a two-year mission after graduation in 2008. The 6-foot-8, 235-pound power forward is expected to sign his National Letter of Intent on Wednesday morning finally making him officially a Bulldog.

Originally, Johnson intended to sign with FS last November. But it was pushed back to the spring. He missed the first seven games of the season recovering from a knee injury, and only started six games. Nonetheless, he is one of the most decorated prep players in the Bay Area leading Mountain View (Calif.) St. Francis to the D2 state championship game, losing to San Diego Lincoln, led by future Bulldog wide receiver – and multiple sport athlete – Victor Dean.

The Western Catholic Athletic League Player of the Year also earned the Palo Alto Daily News Player of the Year award and, most recently, named the San Francisco Chronicle Peninsula Regional Player of the Year. Averaging 13.5 points and 5.2 rebounds per game, Johnson was instant offense off the bench. He moved to the point this last season, mainly because that is where he's slated to play at Fresno State.

The Las Vegas Sun is reporting Olekaibe will sign with the Bulldogs on Friday. It comes as somewhat as a surprise. The Las Vegas (Nev.) Cimarron Memorial standout took an official visit to Fresno earlier this month; however, he was expected to make a decision at least after visiting San Francisco on April 23. Despite offers from Boise State and UTEP, the opportunity to play early at Fresno State was most appealing, he told the Sun.

Like Johnson, Olekaibe is a shooting guard expected to make the move to the point in college. He led the state of Nevada in scoring averaging a staggering a 35.6 points per game, but he also dished out 4.8 assists per game.
