Ryan Mathews is the first Fresno State player drafted in the first round since Logan Mankins in 2005. He becomes the fifth Bulldog ever to be selected in the first round of the NFL Draft and the third under head coach Pat Hill.

The Chargers traded their first-round pick (No. 28), second-round pick (No. 40), fourth-round pick (No. 126) and LB Tim Dobbins to the Dolphins to move up 16 spots in the first round and acquire Fresno State RB Ryan Mathews. In return, the Chargers also got a fourth-round pick (No. 110) and sixth-round pick (No. 173).

GM A.J. Smith has a history of aggressively pursuing the players he wants, trading multiple picks to move up for Eric Weddle in 2007 and Jacob Hester in 2008.
