"This will be my second year playing quarterback ever," said Fishback. "My first year was a learning experience. I was brought up as a sophomore. I was supposed to play quarterback as a sophomore, but I decided to play American Legion baseball. I ended up not starting as a sophomore because there was a senior in front of me that was at all the summer events, and I wasn't because I was at American Legion. I ended up playing running back."
To say he succeeded would be an understatement. He was named MVP, and he earned all-conference honors.
"Last year I stepped in and tried to learn the basics of quarterback," added Fishback. "I'm just trying to get better each year I play.
In the spring and summer, he's been one of the more active quarterbacks at various camps and combines. He was named QB MVP at the Oregon State Nike Football Training Camp. He was arguably top performing quarterback at the June 19 Fresno State Individual Skills Camp. He also camped at San Diego State and San Jose State as well at the Steve Clarkson Dreamaker and DeBartolo Sports University quarterback camps.
"My experience was great going around the nation and meeting all these [NFL] guys that have gotten to where I want to be," Fishback said of competing at various camps. "Getting their input and getting to see what it takes to make it."
Earlier this month, he quarterbacked Team NorCal in the Passing Down Elite 7-on-7 Challenge. His team was a late entry, and it included some of Northern California's top players including four-star safety James Sample and top 2012 prospects Shaquille Thompson and Dalen Jones. However, Fishback was unfamiliar with most of them as the team was put together just days before the July 9 tournament.
"I thought it was really fun, it was fun getting a group of guys together and throwing the ball around," said Fishback.
"Shaq Thompson, James Sample, and Dalen Jones, I don't see that kind of talent at Durham, it was good throwing to those guys. It gives me an idea of what [talent] I'll see in college."
Fishback says Fresno State, San Diego State, and Washington State were some of the schools that visited his high school during the spring evaluation process. He is also being recruited by Eastern Washington, Oregon State, and Tulsa. But he is still waiting on his first offer.
"Right now, my best bet is San Jose State, Fresno State, or Eastern Washington," Fishback said about the schools that could offer him. "Fresno State [head coach] Pat Hill sent me a letter saying I was on their top recruiting board. That gave me some confidence.
"My top three right now is Fresno State, San Jose State, and Eastern Washington. I would be nice to be close to home, my family wants me close to home. It would be great to go to a California school or even a Washington school, somewhere on the West Coast."
Academically, Fishback reports a 3.17 core GPA.
