The Bulldogs came into the game favored by 30 points, and fans were expecting an easy victory. The game was close throughout and once again Coach Steve Cleveland’s team started the game off slowly.
BOXSCORE
While the team was shooting well from downtown, hitting 38 percent of their three-point shots, they are still struggling from the foul line only hitting 52 percent of their free throws.
Defense, especially in the paint, was another issue all night for the ‘Dogs. Monterey Bay guard Augie Johnston was able to penetrate all night and led all scorers with 31 points.
At times the team seemed not to utilize their height advantage, mostly preferring to settle for outside shots. The crowd became anxious as the team went cold towards the end of the second half, thinking of the Bulldog’s loss to Cal State Bakersfield earlier this season.
"I though we really had a chance to take control of the game in the first half,” Coach Steve Cleveland said. “We had an 11 point lead and could have extended it but we didn't convert on some shots that we should have. I think that kept them in the game and they made a nice run and then it turned into a dog fight."
Senior point guard Kevin Bell was injured with less than 5 minutes left in the second half, but he remained in the game with a strained quadriceps muscle.
“We had some guys cramping tonight but they battled through,’ Cleveland Said. “Kevin Bell was really hampered.”
Bell was able to keep his team in the game, playing tough while injured.
With less than ten seconds remaining in the game, the ‘Dogs were down 75-72 and needed a three point basket to tie. With the clock winding down, forward Brian Harvey threw up a prayer with two Otters in his face almost four feet beyond the arc. Harvey drained the shot and sent to game to overtime.
In overtime, the Bulldogs took care of business outscoring the Otters 10 to 5 in the extra five minutes. The overtime run was sparked by Bell’s only steal of the night, which led to an easy lay-up.
While the Bulldogs did not play as well as expected, they were still able to win and had some bright spots. Harvey had a career-high for points with 19, three of those coming as the clock wound down. He also had a career-high four blocked shots. The team scored a season high 85 points and got the victory.
“We will take it, learn from it and move on,” Cleveland said. “This is the kind of game that can be very beneficial for a team as the season progresses. Winning in overtime will give you confidence."
Up next for Fresno State is a Saturday night show down with the UNLV Runnin’ Rebels in Las Vegas. The team will have only a few practice days to prepare for their next opponent.
